The Department processes requests for criminal history information and background checks of New Jersey residents in compliance with state laws. However, while the state department provides the statewide criminal history of the subject, the Cumberland Sheriff's office only maintains records pertaining to events that occurred within county limits. Ultimately, Cumberland criminal records can be obtained at the state or county level.

Where and How to Get Marriage Records, Birth Records and Death Records

An alternative to obtaining vital records from the office of the Registrar of Vital Statistics in the municipality where the event occurred, marriage records, birth records, and death records can be obtained from the State Vital Statistics office. In the state of New Jersey, these documents are not public record and as such, they will only be issued to the subject of the record, persons who have the legal authority to access the record and persons with legal, verifiable interests

To obtain a copy of a record, eligible persons are required to submit a completed birth/death record application or marriage record application to the office. The application must be accompanied by a copy of the requestor's government-issued ID, the correct fee, and proof of the relationship (if applicable). Applications should be made to:

New Jersey Department of Health
Office of Vital Statistics and Registry
P.O. Box 370
Trenton, NJ 08625-0370

In addition to government agencies, county public records may also be obtained from third-party websites. These non-government platforms come with intuitive tools that allow for expansive searches. Record seekers may either opt to use these tools to search for a specific record or multiple records. Users are able to search third-party websites remotely for multiple records at a time with just the name of the record subject and their last known location, including the city, county, or state. Third-party sites are not sponsored by government agencies. Because of this, record availability and results may vary.
