Frontex sends permanent corps officers to Moldova
Following the signature of a status agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova concerning the operational activities carried out by Frontex, the Agency and the Moldovan authorities signed the operational plan allowing the start of an operation joint Frontex (JO) in Moldova.
The Joint Operation (JO) Moldova aims to provide increased technical and operational assistance to the host country, coordinating operational activities on the territory and under the control of the authorities of the Republic of Moldova.
The Frontex permanent corps officers will help the Moldovan authorities to deal with the massive number of people fleeing the war in Ukraine and crossing the border into Moldova, and will carry out other border control tasks if necessary. They include border control officers and document experts.
The objectives of the operation are also to control illegal immigration flows, to fight against cross-border crime and to strengthen European cooperation and law enforcement activities. JO Moldova is implemented within the framework of multipurpose operational activities in third countries. Currently, 18 permanent corps officers are already pre-deployed to Moldova and the operation will see the deployment of up to 84 permanent corps officers and document inspection devices to support border controls.
