Medvedev warns against collaboration between Romania and Moldova
Moldova’s EU membership is possible, not directly, but through the creation of the “new Greater Romania”, said Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev.
“The consequences can be far less funny,” he said, referring to the joint meeting recently organized by lawmakers from Romania and Moldova.
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) detected some frustration in the statements of the Russian official. “The statements indicate, in addition to a high degree of frustration, one thing is certain: the decision of the European Council to grant candidate status to the Republic of Moldova is a correct decision and represents a truly historic achievement. [for Moldova]“, we read in a statement from the MAE.
Medvedev commented on a less optimistic note, suggesting on a sour note another way for Moldova to join the EU – by uniting with Romania.
“Moldova has entered the long queue for EU membership, which stretches over decades. Bon voyage! But [they] want it sooner! Therefore, there is another way to gain EU membership: the creation of a new Greater Romania (Romania Mare),” the politician said on his Telegram channel, responding to a question from TASS. on when Moldova could join the Union.
He noted that “Romanian politicians have been dancing politically in circles around Moldova” for a long time. Today it is literally happening, he stressed.
